Classical Figurative Drawing Demonstration
by Lacey Lewis

Figurative Sketch
All my drawings start with light outlines. If you look closely, you can see lines enveloping the figure, running from the toes of one foot to the other and up towards the head, creating a triangle. Measurements are made multiple times and from various reference points as I sketch the figure. Then, I add some shading and darker lines as I start to break up the interior of the torso.
Drawing Demonstration
Once I start to become sure of placement, I begin to finalize the outline. The quality of the line is varied according to what I want it to express, and I strive to show even subtle variations in the curve of the edges. I start to really shade in the shadows on the torso and build some solid form there. This is a central area of the drawing, and also contains some of the darkest shadows, so it will be a good area to compare all others against as I continue.
