In this workshop taught by Lisa Gloria, we will work through a composition with silk flowers in a vessel, step by step. Class time will include both demonstrations and one-on-one coaching during a directed painting experience.

On the first day, we will arrange a simple composition using silk flowers in glass or metal containers. The composition will be drawn in paint on the surface, focusing on accuracy and preparation for the "end game." We will proceed into the block-in stage, making small adjustments for the condensed time-frame of the weekend.

On the second day, after a demonstration, we will bring the painting forward to a stage of finish. Techniques for creating texture, focus, and surfaces will be explored. We will discuss what makes something look real, and how to achieve levels of finish.

A moderate level of oil painting experience is best, to ensure you get the most from this workshop.

Materials list

Please bring the following materials, and a lunch. Silk flowers and vessels will be provided, as well as a table on which to set up the still life.

2 toned linen panels, 8 x 8 to 11 x 14 in size. Your choice. I prefer a very smooth surface and recommend it highly. Tone the panel a week or so in advance with a thinned mixture of burnt sienna and ultramarine blue, wiped off with a paper towel.

Recommended professional-grade paints, no "hues" or student paints: Titanium white, flake white, Winsor yellow (or another transparent yellow), cad yellow, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson permanent, ultramarine blue, ivory black, Winsor red (or another transparent high-chroma, high-value red)

Brushes: assorted bristle flats for block-in and drawing. Assorted synthetic flat and round for final stages. Golden taklon or similar is acceptable. I generally do not use nor endorse expensive brushes.

Medium: small jar of rectified turpentine or similar (OMS is fine). Small jar of refined linseed oil. If you have a non-solvent-based medium you're in love with, go ahead and bring it. We will be keeping the fumes to a minimum for everyone's comfort, so the solvent use will be limited to the first part of the first day, and everyone will be encouraged to keep the lid on the jar.

Paper towel
Brush cleaning jar
Easel, table or standing, though you will be sitting.
Easel light if you wish.
Studio lighting will be provided.
